Eleni is an experienced High School teacher having taught to Yr 12 level for over 30 years. She has experience in HSC marking and the writing of materials and assessments and lesson planning and has worked on the Extension Course for Modern Greek in past years. She has been teaching the Beginners Course in Years 11 and 12 and the Junior Yrs 9-10 Modern Greek Courses most recently. She has also worked as an academic teaching Modern Greek at the University of Sydney for 8 years and was a lecturer and convenor of Modern Greek at the University of NSW for two years.
Lessons offered
Years 11 and 12 Beginners and adult Beginners (NSW syllabus) , Intermediate (Can includes short story reading, poetry and songs) and Advanced (Reading course including poetry and novels). All students are given a Placement Test at the first lesson and offered an individualised program of study based on their level, needs and goals. For younger students, Eleni is planning to organise some children's Greek enrichment classes, taught by an experienced primary school teacher, based on the NSW Syllabus. These are to sustain children's engagement in the Greek language, not to be used as a replacement for Greek school, but as an add-on or, for those who do not attend a Greek school, a place where they can experience Greek culture. Materials Used
Depending on the level of the student, there are various bilingual and monolingual texts which may be necessary. Many guides and sheets are individualised for the student's needs. Much of the material is original material produced by Eleni and students will have access to sound files via log in to a private page on this website.
Types of tutoring offered
Online Individual and group lessons:
Students can use ZOOM or TEAMS or several other apps as needed for the lessons.
Small group online classes are also offered when a new group is formed from time to time. Contact Eleni if you wish to add your name to a new Beginners group.
Face-to-face lessons are planned to be held at a site in Marrickville from early next year.
Eleni does not offer at-home tutoring.
What is the difference
You will learn the Greek language in the context of the Greek culture and history making it more relevant and interesting. Greek for travellers is a specific course based on the Teaching guide for Travellers offered on this site.
